Photo Evaluation

While using the Video camera within my AS year, I developed skills which enabled me to successfully complete my coursework, however even though I have skills in this area of technology I felt that it would be better if I used another piece of technology, thats why I have decided to use a different kind of technology in all which I have chosen the iMovie. When I first started using the iMovie I found it difficult to remember the different buttons that done different things so for example when cutting a clip you had to remember that it was Apple T to cut a clip but after a while I started getting used to it and it started to become natural to me. iMovie is a software that allows you to upload clips and photos to use in a video which then you were able to add different things to the video such as effects, titles and voice overs. We used this throughout our documentary to make people more interested and to help the documentary have a smooth flow so there was not any jumps or any unnecessary errors within the film. From using this technology it has helped me become more confident in using this kind of technology and has made it a lot easier for me and my group in editing the film all together.

During my As media i used computer software's such as i movie and photoshop and developed skills to create my coursework however even though i had skills in these softwares i felt that i wanted to try something different this is why i decided to use the video camera. When i first came across the camera during my AS i had a brief introduction into how to use the cameras after this i did not use the camera until the beginning of the A2 coursework. In the beginning of the A2 coursework it was difficult for me to use the video camera as i was not familiar with it one main problem was recording over recorded tape this meant that we lost footage that we already shoot nevertheless i quickly adapted with the video camera and became comfortable with it another problem was keeping it steady however the tripod gave me great support and i was then able to shoot footage successfully. Overall since i began using the camera i have excelled my skills and now i am able to comfortably record using the video camera.

For the AS media assignment i used photoshop to develop and create images for the clip we were creating, this time around i still used the computer but i wanted to become familiar with a new program that would be useful for the coursework we had to complete this year therefore i used a completely different program and this was GarageBand, and i used this to create the audios for the radio advertisement for the documentary, i was very unfamiliar with this program as i never used it before but as time progressed i spent more time fiddling with the program and its features and from this i became more comfortable with GarageBand and in the end i finally created the radio advertisement due to my perseverance and general interest in computer programs.

Print Ad Audience Screening

We piloted our print advert to a mixed audience of both male and female and of different age groups ranging from the ages of 17 - 55 and we gave each of the members of the audience a copy of the questionnaires that we had created and from these questionnaires we gained a lot of valuable and varied feedback.
The feedback that we gained from the questionnaire questions was as followed:

1.The first question that we asked the audience was "would this advert catch your eye and make you want to watch the documentary ?"

The majority of our audience said that yes they would be dragged in by the print ad as there was an interesting use of colours used which were black and white in contrast with rainbow heading, also the audience thought that the title of our documentary was catchy and empowering which would interest them, another thing that our audiences said about this was that they would watch the documentary as the ad shows that its about homosexuality and they would like to see how we would handle the topic as it is so rarely talked about publicly and it is a very sensitive and volatile topic.
The members of the audience that said NO they wouldn't watch the documentary based on the print ad said that the ad was not very specific about what the documentary was about and that it was to bland and needed more colour to portray the homosexual population.

2.The second question that we asked our audience was "Does the print advert show enough detail about the documentary ?"

To this question the majority of our audience said that Yes there was enough detail about the documentary as the date, time and channel were all shown clearly and in immediate view of the audience the people in the audience that said No to the question misinterpreted the question as the said it should have detailed what the documentary was about therefore we had to exclude these answers as they were invaluable to us and what we where looking for.

3.the final question that we asked in our questionnaire was "Do you think that this ad could be improved? if so why?"

As this was a very open question we got a lot of constructive feedback from our viewers and the most relevant answers to this question where as followed:
  • the Advert needs more colour
  • the channel 4 sign on the advert is not easy to see
  • the picture for the advert could be better and more relevant
  • brighter colours could be used to portray a homosexual community
  • the font used for the title could be more spaced out
  • there could be a catch phrase used to get viewers interested in the documentary
What we are going to change :
  • the image and colour of the print ad
  • the positioning of the time and date on the print ad
  • the positioning of the heading
  • make the relationship seem more defined in the picture

Audience screening for Documentary

Here And Queer Audience Screening Questionnaire

Age/Age group: The age group of our audience screening was 17-55 this was helpful as our initial target audience was in this range therefore the feedback we will get would be representative to the public.

Gender:

We had a majority of females and males that contributed to answering our questionnaire so it was equal and it was not a biased audience.

1. Do you feel that the documentary and its purpose are introduced clear enough, if not how could it be improved?
The majority of the audience we rather pleased by the documentary and its purpose was very well presented however there were a few suggestions that the introduction was not very clear as they could not hear the presenters very well moreover they felt that it was introduced. Overall after reviewing the feedback we will now re-shoot our introduction so it is more clear and the presenters are heard.

2. Do you think that the appropriate music has been used throughout the documentary?
The majority of our audience felt that the music that we used was appropriate and that it was not over powering. But on the other hand there was some people that thought that in some places that it was too high and they could not hear the presenters properly. So from this feedback we will be looking into what parts need to be lowered and adjusted. We also got feedback that as we spoke about lady gaga then we should use one of her tracks on the part that we are talking about her but as we can only use uncopyrighted music, we are unable to use one of her songs.

3. How do you feel about the topic of homosexuality?

From the feedback fro this question we found out that from our audience is was a mixture of feelings as some did not agree with it and said that “I feel it is against human nature and trying to play god” while others said that “I am a believer that people should live as they want to, so long as no body gets hurt” so from the audience feedback they was not a majority of views for one side it was equal.

4. Do you think that the interviews were relevant to the topic and do you feel that they show clear views about homosexuality?
From our feedback we can see that the majority of our audience said that our interviews were relevant but they suggested they we could possibly find someone who has a different view and that is against the matter of being homosexual. Other people said that it was good as it allowed people to express their own opinions

5. If this documentary were showing on mainstream TV would you watch it? Why?
The majority if people said that they would watch this documentary as some said that they are passionate about this topic, some people had personal family reasons why they would watch this, they said they would like to see other peoples opinions on this topic, it would interest them as it is made by young people. From the people that said they wouldn’t watch this there reasons were because they are not affected by homosexuality and because there are other documentaries that are similar to this one.

6. What age group do you feel that this documentary would be suitable for?
The majority of our audience said that they thought that our documentary would be suitable for the ages between 14 and 25, which this is the target audience that we have targeted for.

7. What channel do you feel this program would be best suited for and what time do you think it should be aired? Why?
From our feedback we found out that our audience thought that the best option for us to air our documentary would be either on Channel 4 or BBC3 as these are the more likely channels to air documentaries. They also gave us other ideas of what time to air our documentary, they suggested that it should be shown around 9pm as this may not be acceptable for young children to watch.

8. Overall what is your personal opinion on the documentary as a whole? WHY?

From the majority of our audience they said they enjoyed our documentary as it had a variety of opinions, gave statistics, evidence from celebrities, they also said that we could improve on our lighting and some of our editing, they also said that they could not understand one of our presenters so we have decided to change our presenters around to the original two people that we had at the start.

things we will changing about our questionnaire;

  • we will be adding a different view about homosexuality to get both views
  • we have decided to change our presenters
  • we are going to reshoot our introduction and our ending
  • we will be changing some of the adjustments on the sound so people are able to hear more clear

Radio Ad Audience Screening

Radio Ad

1. If you heard this advert on the radio would it encourage you to watch the documentary? Why?

From the feedback we received it showed us that we had an equal amount of people that said that this would encourage hem to watch and people that said they wouldn’t. The people that said they would watch it, here are the reasons; catchy music, views are expressed, catchy intro, makes them aware of other peoples views on homosexuality and also that is sounds realistic. The people that said this wouldn’t encourage them to watch because it just highlights conflict already known (needs uniqueness), too monotone, not catchy enough, too much like an argument and segregates homosexuals although they are different.

2. Is there enough information about where and when the documentary will be shown?

From the feedback it showed us that all of our audience said that there was enough information on our radio ad but this should be the last thing that is said so that the listener does not forget when and where it is being shown. They also mentioned that with our date we said the 30th February, which this is not a date; so we will be changing a radio add to an appropriate date.

3. Do you feel that the music is appropriate for the advertisement? Why?

We got an equal amount of feedback from this question as some of our audience said that the music was good as it did not over power out speech and other people said that it wasn’t good, as it “sounds depressing”. They also said that at the start it didn’t sound as interesting as it did at the end because at the end it sounded more upbeat.

4. Do you think that this radio ad could be improved? If yes, then why?

From the feedback our audience gave us several improvements that we could do to help our radio add, some of these were; introduce the main issue, just touch upon views and opinions so viewers want to see it, the argument was irrelevant and offensive to some people, we needed more catchy music, we needed more inflection- too monotone, to make our speech more clear and enthusiastic and also that as we got the date wrong that we needed to change the date.

The things that we will be changing;

· We will be changing the date

· We could possibly be changing the music

· Make it more enthusiastic

· We will be rerecording our speech
